Cuban Rockstar Detained

Gorki Águila, front man for underground Cuban rock band Porno Para Ricardo, was arrested by police on Monday, August 25 at his house while he rehearsed with his band.

Gorki is thought to be held at a police station commonly known as "La Quinta" until about Thursday, where he is expected to be tried for the dubious charge of "pre-crime social dangerousness" (The law on dangerousness is known in Cuba as "Law 62").

If found guilty of "dangerousness," Gorki would face 1 to 4 years in prison.

Gorki's voice has been among the loudest and most defiant of Cuba's youth. His band, Porno Para Ricardo, has made a name for itself by fearlessly defying persistent censorship with lyrics like these:

Miren como nos hablan de libertad
cuando ellos nos privan en realidad.
Miren como nos hablan de paraíso
cuando nos lluevan penas como granizo.
(Translation)
Look at how they tell us about liberty
When they deprive us in reality.
Look at how they tell us about paradise
When sentences rain on us like hail.

This move serves as yet another example of Cuban authorities' disregard for human rights and free expression.
